we’re halfway there

Dr. Yousef Mohammed
After nearly six months of filing our lawsuit (248/Federal/2022) against the unconstitutionality of the law on the continuation of the fifth session of the Kurdistan Parliament No. (12) of 2022, the Federal Supreme Court was scheduled to issue its decision today. However, the court decided to reopen the judicial process and set a date of 24/5 to summon the Iraqi Election Commission to obtain opinions on their readiness to hold the next elections due to the inefficiency of the Election Commission.
When we started this process, we had two main goals:
First, end the inappropriate tradition of constantly postponing all elections and extending the term of office of the region. We have been working in this field for almost fourteen years and we have not been willing to give up this belief and goal for the sake of any position or special interest.
It seems that we have succeeded in this goal and we have been able to convince the court that the extension of the term of parliament and the powers of the region is unconstitutional and contrary to the principles of democracy, otherwise the court would have rejected our request today.
Second: Working to hold a different election from all previous elections in the region, ensuring the integrity of the elections by neutralizing the armed forces and security forces, normalizing the situation in Erbil and all other regions of Kurdistan and taking other technical measures to ensure transparency The purity of the elections.
What does this have to do with the lives of citizens? In fact, unless we work to make the vote of the citizens and the ballot box the only tool to resolve the conflict of political forces, unless we make all political forces afraid of losing the elections, we can not force them to give up their private interests.
